Two Products That Changed My Life (Or At Least My Makeup Collection)

Hey Everyone,

A few months ago I revealed a dirty little makeup secret on twitter: I, Alicia, a makeup obsessed blogger, do NOT like loose powder shadows or pigments. Yes, they come in a variety of unique colours and tend to be more pigmented when compared to pressed eyeshadows, but I really could not stand how messy they were. Not only do they produce a lot of fallout during application, I personally have found that they tend to fall off of the eye during the day, leaving your eyeshadow looking patchy and just plain weird. With my secret out, I swore I would never again wear a loose powder shadow and completely avoided buying them no matter how nice the colour.

Well, a couple of weeks ago my feelings towards loose powder shadows completely changed when I fell head over heels in love with two unique makeup products. Today, I want to share them with you and hopefully change the minds of other LSH's (Loose Shadow Haters) out there. Here are the two products that changed my life (or at least my makeup collection).

1) LA Splash's 'Splash Proof Sealer' Eyeshadow Sealer Base: I originally bought this eyeshadow sealer base because I had heard that it was a great product for helping cosmetic glitter stick to the eyes (Yes, for some reason glitter never bothered me. I think it's because it's sparkly!). Well, let me say that while it works great with glitter, it works even better when used with loose powder shadows. After applying my preferred eyeshadow primer (usually Urban Decay's Primer Potion), I apply a very thin coat of the shadow sealer base to my lid making sure not to bring it up too high (unless you want shadow above your crease). It is from there that the magic happens. Using a flat shadow brush, I pat my preferred loose shadow on top of the tacky base, and without fail, it completely sticks to the eye leaving absolutely NO fallout! At only $6.99 USD, this is a miracle product for me and something I would very highly recommend to both lovers and hater of powder shadows. You can purchase this product on the LA Splash website. Seriously, what are you waiting for? Go get it!

2) BM Beauty's Loose Eyeshadow in 'Her Majesty': This amazingly gorgeous pink, with golden shimmer shadow, was the catalyst for re-thinking my feelings about loose powder shadow. When I first opened the lid of 'Her Majesty' (note, this product was sent to me for consideration), I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. This shadow looks incredible as an all over lid colour and I honestly believe that it would look great on any skin tone and with any eye colour. 'Her Majesty' is bright enough for spring and summer but would also look great as a pop of colour during the colder months. The small flecks of golden glitter give this shadow a duo-chrome effect and depending on the way the light hits the eye, the shadow  looks different at different angles. This is one of the most beautiful eyeshadows I have ever used and I can say 100% without a doubt that I will be buying a full size container of this shadow (as soon as I am done my P10P). This shadow retails for £7.00 and can be bought on the BM Beauty website

I can't say this enough, I love both of these products. Not only will they be making an appearance in my May favourites post (coming soon!), they have both become holy grail products for me. If you have been looking for some great new products to try out, I would definitely add both of these to your beauty wish list.

NOTD: Mimosas For Everyone!

Hey Everyone,

Since the first moment I saw makeup artist Lisa Eldridge wearing this nail polish, on one of her youtube videos several months ago, I knew I had to get my hands on Chanel's 'Mimosa' nail polish, a bright yellow polish infused with a gorgeous golden sheen. So, when a friend of mine surprised me with my first Chanel nail polish last week, I couldn't wait to put it on. Of course after all of the awesome responses to my last NOTD post, I once again had to take a page from youtube and jewelry sensation 'Loraine Stanick' and apply a coat of gold glitter to both of my ring fingers.

Overall, I love the look. While it is absolutely perfect for summer, I can definitely see this colour working during the rest of the year.

I am so thankful to my friend who picked this up for me and can't wait to hear all of your thoughts on this week's Nail of the Day.

NOTD: I've Got The Rainy Day Blues

Hey Everyone,

Before I show you my super fabulous nail of the day, I wanted to acknowledge my lack of blogging lately. As a lot of you already know, I suffer from a chronic pain condition called fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, with the crappy weather we have been having in this part of Canada, I have been having more bad days than good.

I absolutely love blogging and very much appreciate the encouragement and support my subscribers have shown me throughout the last year. I have a lot of great posts planned for the next couple of months and, with the summer weather on its way, I hope to get back to my regular posting schedule. Thank you to all of my subscribers for sticking with me!!

This week I decided to go for a more 'out there' nail polish look. I don't own many blue nail polishes, but when I saw OPI's 'Ogre The Top' (from last year's Shrek collection) at my nail salon, I knew I had to give it a try. I absolutely love the way the colour looks on my nails and think it is the perfect blue to transition from spring to summer.

Recently, I have been obsessively watching youtube guru Loraine Stanick (The Current Custom)'s vlog videos. One thing I noticed is that Loraine always punches up her manicures by adding glitter to the ring finger on both hands. Of course, wanting to be just like Loraine (seriously, you should see all of the online jewelry searches I have been doing), I decided to give it a try. It was a bit of a touch and go endeavour but I am really happy with the way it turned out.

As I have been on a Project 10 Pan for the past week (post to follow) and am only allowing myself to buy nail polish and skincare, you can definitely expect to see a lot more 'Nail of the Day' posts from me.

Thanks again for all of your support.

Je Suis Prettyful Haul (Plus 20% Off Code)

Hey Everyone,

Last week I received a really awesome package from my friend, and fellow beauty blogger, Carmen from Carmen’s LaLa Land. Carmen recently started her own accessories store on etsy called Je Suis Prettyful (how great is that?!) and was kind enough to send me some of her cutest items.

The first thing I noticed about the items that Carmen sent me was their packaging. Each piece of jewelry came in a small black and white striped paper bag sealed with a cute little pink sticker with the address of her website. Inside, the bag, both pieces of jewelery, came on cute little hang tags bearing the name of her company.

The first items I received from Carmen were two pairs of her 'Flower Cabochon Stud Earrings' in pink and white. Perfect for spring and summer, these earrings (at 16mm wide) are the perfect size to be noticeable without being too over the top. These earrings come in six different colours and are priced at  £3.50 for two pairs.

These earrings are honestly so cute. I have seen a lot of flower bud earrings in stores this month but haven’t seen any that are as detailed as these. At £3.50, I think these earrings are a steal and I definitely plan on buying some of the other colours Carmen sells in her store.

The second item I received from Je Suis Prettyful was the 'Kitsch Nautical Anchor Necklace'. This super cute white plastic anchor comes with a 19 inch silver plated necklace and is priced at £6.00.

It wasn’t until I received this necklace from Carmen that I realized just how trendy anchors are for summer. It seems that everywhere I look from the Rachel Roy website to Forever 21 I see anchors, anchors and more anchors. As a plus sized girl, I love that this necklace is long enough to fit nicely around my neck and doesn’t choke me like some of the other pieces I’ve purchased in the past do.

From jewelry and brooches to headbands and hair clips, Je Suis Prettyful carries a lot of girly and pretty pieces. I love that Carmen took a leap of faith and started her own store, and, as she is a fellow beauty blogger, I really want to support her. I love everything she sent me and already have a cart full of other items I plan to purchase from her store in the future.

I am so thankful to Carmen for sending me these items, thanks Carmen! When you get a chance, be sure to check out Je Suis Prettyful and let me know what items you would love to own.

**Carmen has set up a discount code on her site. Use FUNNYFACEBEAUTY to receive 20% off your order**

April Favourites

Hey Everyone,

I realize I am behind the times as we are already well into the month of May, but as monthly favourites posts are my favourite posts to read (and write), I decided to go ahead and show what I was using and loving during the month of April.
With the weather where I live being cold and rainy the majority of April, I decided to keep my makeup simple; sticking to a few staple products rather than mixing it up every day. Here are my April favourites:

1) Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in 'Tipsy': Last month I did a small makeup swap with one of my favourite bloggers, Tiffany from Will Work for Makeup. Tiffany had been longing after MAC's Stereo Rose MSF and since I had only used mine once or twice, I told her I would send mine to her. When Tiffany asked if I would like anything in return, I mentioned that I had been longing after Tarte's 'Tipsy' blush, a product she had recently swatched on her blog. Like all of the Amazonian Clay blushes, Tipsy claims to last on the cheeks for up to 12 hours and help minimize oil on the face to reduce shine (something I definitely need help with). In my opinion, Tipsy is the perfect summer cheek colour. With a mixture of coral, orange and pink, this blush gives the cheeks a gorgeous pop of colour and works well with almost any eyeshadow or lipstick look. I really love this blush and can definitely see myself purchasing more colours from the line in the future.

2) Dior Diorskin Shimmer Powder in 'Amber Diamond': I had been lusting after the Diorskin Shimmer Powder for months after seeing a number of posts featuring gorgeous swatches of this golden face highlighter. So, when I received a discount code from, an online beauty product supply company that offers free world wide shipping (you guys know how I feel about shipping costs), I decided there was no better time to buy my first Dior face product. The Diorskin Shimmer Powder is truly the ultimate highlighter. With a mix of 5 different gold toned colours, this highlighter gives the cheeks a completely smooth golden glow. So pretty! While the price is somewhat hard to justify, those willing to pay $45 USD for this highlighter will not be disappointed.

3) Bonne Bell Eyeshadow Stick in 'Luminous Lilac': After seeing Mila Kunis' lavender dress at the 2011 Oscar Awards, I have been on the hunt for the perfect lavender eyeshadow. While I have found several similar-coloured shadows, it wasn't until I saw this Bonne Bell eyeshadow stick sitting in my local drugstore, that I knew I had found my perfect match (I realize I sound like an e-harmony commercial). Not too light, but not too bright, this eyeshadow stick is the PERFECT shade of lavender. This super creamy shadow applies smoothly and can be worn alone or under your favourite purple (or grey) powder shadow. At less than $5 USD, this Bonne Bell product is a real steal.

4) Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in 'RSVP': I have always been a big fan of Benefit's cream eyeshadows and RSVP does not disappoint. This shimmering nude-pink shadow gives the eyes a natural, yet very put together, look. Like their name states, these cream shadows are creaseless and dry within seconds creating a budge proof base or all over shadow. My favourite way to wear this shadow is under a light coat of Ulta's 'Sunburst' eyeshadow (see below) with a light coat of black mascara. If you haven't had a chance to try any of Benefit's Creaseless Cream shadows, head to your local supplier and ask for a sample of RSVP.

5) Ulta Eyeshadow in 'Sunburst': At first glance, this Ulta eyeshadow looks pretty boring in the pan. It is only when swatched that you see how beautiful this eyeshadow really is. With its peachy-pink base and gold sheen, this eyeshadow looks different at different angles and in different lighting, making it the perfect shadow for any eye colour. This eyeshadow looks great all over the eye, especially when used with a base like Benefit's Creaseless Cream shadow in 'RSVP'.

6) MAC Cremesheen Glass in 'Richer, Lusher': By now, most of you probably know that my all time favourite type of lipgloss is MAC's Cremesheen Glasses. Unlike MAC's other glosses, Cremesheens are not at all sticky and leave the lips feeling super smooth and moisturized. They are also super pigmented and give the lips a good dose of colour. 'Richer, Lusher', a bright pink-toned coral, is a very versatile colour and can be worn with a light neutral eye (to brighten the look) or with a dark smoky eye (to tone down the look). 'Richer, Lusher' was my first ever Cremesheen Glass and will probably remain my favourite for a while (well at least, until next month).

7) The Body Shop 'Aloe Lip Treatment': My lips get horrible during the colder months. Not only do they get super chapped, I get these really painful cuts on the sides of my mouth that absolutely kill. I have tried so many different types of lip chaps, lip treatments, lip balms, etc. but didn't find anything that helped until I decided to give The Body Shop's Aloe Lip Treatment a try. This super thick, lightly sticky balm, which claims to soothe, repair and protect easily irritated lips, gives my lips a good coat of moisture and helps make the small cuts on the sides of my mouth disappear. While I probably wouldn't use this treatment during the day (too thick), I like to apply this at night before bed so that it can sink in and repair my lips while I'm sleeping. I would definitely recommend this product to others who are having lip 'problems' and have already bought myself a second tube.

8) Essie Nail Polish: My biggest discovery/favourite product for the month of April has definitely been Essie's Nail Polishes. These polishes, which come in a large variety of colours, not only apply smoothly and evenly, they last forever and do not chip. While I have several different brands of polish in my collection (including OPI, China Glaze, etc), these days I find myself only reaching for my Essie polishes. While I am only showing three colours from my Essie polish collection in this post ('Funny Face' a bright pink, 'Borrowed & Blue' a baby blue and 'Haute as Hello' a peachy-pink), let me know if you would like to see more and I can do a separate post (including swatches) featuring my entire collection.

'Haute as Hello', 'Borrowed & Blue', 'Funny Face', 'Luminous Lavender', 'Amber Diamond', 'Sunburst', 'Richer,Lusher'

With the weather slowly becoming nicer, I can't wait to start using some of my more colourful eyeshadows, lipsticks, etc. and find some new products to feature in my next monthly favourites post.

Have you tried any of the above products? Have you been wanting to? What were your monthly favourites for April? Let me know in the comment section below.

To note, I am looking for 5-7 guest posts for the beginning of June. If you are at all interested, please send me an email (along with some post ideas) to

Hey Everyone,

Between a new job and horrible weather (rain, rain and more rain), it has taken me a long time to take pictures and post about my NYC and IMATS haul. With the belief of better late than never, I finally got pictures (including swatches) of everything I bought on my vacation and can't wait to show you all of my new goodies. So, without further ado, here is my haul.

The first store I hit in NYC was a gigantic Sephora in the Soho neighbourhood. While we do have Sephora's in Canada, the prices are absolutely ridiculous ($39 US vs. $51 CAN) and I prefer to buy my products in the US. While I had been hoping to get my hands on some Illasmaqua products, when it came down to purchasing something from the line, I didn't find anything I just had to have. Instead, I picked up the following products:

1) Too Faced 'Romantic Eye' Palette: I had been going back and forth on this palette for several months before my trip to NYC. While I have a lot eyeshadow colours similar to the ones in this palette in my collection, I couldn't get over how gorgeous 'Cut the Cake' (a light lavender-grey) was. As I have been trying to save this palette for photographing, I haven't had a good chance to play around with the colours, but can say the shadows seem very creamy and fairly pigmented when swatched. If you would be interested in seeing a more thorough review of this Too Faced palette, let me know and I can start 'recording' my thoughts.

2) Laura Mercier 'Tinted Moisturizer': If you asked me six months ago whether or not I would ever consider using a tinted moisturizer, I would have flat out said "NO WAY!". I have been struggling with acne (and acne scars) for several years now, and therefore have always used a full-coverage foundation. Recently, however I saw a youtube video from Lisa Eldridge explaining that people with acne should use a light coverage foundation on the clear parts of their skin and a concealer on acne spots. I have been taking that approach for the last month or so, and love it. Rather than looking cakey, my skin looks radiant and smooth. I love how moisturizing this tinted moisturizer is (duh!) and would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a nice, natural, glowing look.

3) Urban Decay All Nighter Spray: This makeup setting spray was a last minute purchase for me (those little bins at checkout always get me). So far, I have tried the Urban Decay 'All Nighter Spray' twice and have not been impressed. As someone who tends to sweat a lot (gross I know), this has not helped keep my makeup on and instead makes my face feel somewhat sticky. I personally, would not recommend it.

1) Inglot 10 Shadow Freedom Palette: My first stop at IMATS was the Inglot booth. I had seen so many awesome reviews and swatches of their eyeshadows and knew I had to get my hands on one of their 10 shadow freedom palettes. I am absolutely in love with these shadows and honestly regret not buying more. Not only are these shadows super creamy, they are highly pigmented and at $3.60 each (IMATS price) they are a total steal.

2) Inglot 'AMC Lip Gloss' in 544 & 545: With their iridescent finish, these lip glosses are really cool and unlike anything I have ever tried. '544' is a gorgeous medium pink colour and '545' a beautiful orange-peach. Both glosses are not sticky (which I love) and feel moisturizing on the lips.

3) Jesse's Girl 'Liquid Glass' Lip Gloss in 'Blossom': One of my favourite experiences at IMATS was getting to meet youtube guru, Julie G. Not only was she super friendly and humble, her lips looked great! After asking her what she was wearing, I bought 'Blossom', a gorgeous coral-pink gloss with a golden sheen.

4) Jesse's Girl 'Electric Pink' Lip Gloss in 'Shock Wave': This super, hot-pink lipgloss with iridescent purple shimmer is perfect for summer's bold lip trend. In my opinion, this gloss is a super cheap dupe for MAC's 'Electric Fuchsia' lipglass.

5) Jesse's Girl High Intensity Nail Colour in 'Baby Cakes' and 'Wild Thing': I love nail polish and when I saw these two super bright colours, I just knew I had to add them to my collection. 'Baby Cakes' is a perfect neon-pink colour that will look awesome on both fingers and toes, while 'Wild Thing's' electric purple colour will look great all year round.

6) JulieG713's Free Gift: To celebrate Julie G's appearance at the 2011 IMATS, Jesse's Girl Cosmetics put together a free gift for everyone who visited the booth. This set includes 'High Intensity Nail Polish' in 'Julie G'(a gorgeous coral), 'Formula 13 Lipgloss' in 'Papaya' (coral with pink glitter) and 'Mineralized Baked Powder Eyeshadow' in 'Ocean Breeze (light blue with dark blue veining). Rather than keep all of these products for myself, I have chosen to include some of them in my large June giveaway (I have not opened or swatched the products I will be giving away).

7) Yaby Cosmetics 'Pearl Paint' and 'Regular' Eyeshadows: For some reason I imagined Yaby's products to be super expensive, so when I saw the company's booth at IMATS Toronto, I didn't take a look at what they had for sale. Well, I was totally wrong. At only $2.99 each, these tiny eyeshadows pack a lot of pigment and apply like a dream. I bought six colours in total and will definitely be purchasing some more at this year's Toronto IMATS.

8) Yaby Cosmetics Blush Refills in 'BL034' and 'BL002': Like the Yaby eyeshadows, these blushes (I believe they were priced $4.99 each) are super pigmented and very creamy. 'BL034' is a dusty pink that reminds me of MAC's 'Pink Swoon', while 'BL002' is a hot, neon pink.

9) Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics in 'Beta': While I own several OCC lip tars, I don't wear them as often as I would like to as I find they dry out my lips easily (now, my lips dry out easily with vaseline or chapstick too). However, when I first saw swatches of Beta, a neon orange gloss, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Beta is definitely not a colour for those afraid of bright lips, but if you love the new bold lip trend, I would definitely recommend getting your hands on this.

10) Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Blogger Giftpack: David Klasfeld (co-owner and creator of OCC) was nice enough to give me a blogger sample pack including 'Trollop' and 'Interlace' Lip Tars and 'Bitmap' and 'Distortion' Loose Colour Pigments. As it was so nice of him to provide me with this pack, I have struggled with my decision to not open these and include them in my big June giveaway. I have several lip tars and loose colour pigments and would really love to give my subscribers a chance to try them out (and hopefully blog about them). I wouldn't be given a blogger pack if it weren't for your support of my blog and so I want to share a part of my IMATS experience with you.

11) LA Splash 'Lip Gloss' in 'Classic' and 'In Love': These are the first products I have ever tried from LA Splash and I have to say that I am really impressed. Not only are they not sticky, they feel moisturizing on the lips and smell amazing (vanilla!). 'Classic', a nude-pink look great over any pink lipstick to tone down the colour while 'In Love', a brighter medium pink gloss, looks great on its own.

12) LA Splash 'Eyeshadow Sealer Base': After hearing so many great things about this shadow base which helps keep pigment and glitter stuck to the eyelid and prevents fallout, I had to try it out for myself. Although I've really only played around with it a couple of times, I have to say I am both shocked and impressed. This sealer base definitely keeps glitter stuck to the eye leaving fallout at a minimum. I definitely recommend this.

13) LA Splash 'Smokyeye Shadow Duo' in 'Heavy Metal': Besides the Inglot shadow palette, this is probably my second favourite item I purchased from IMATS. This duo, which contains a very dark, inky black shadow and a shimmering green-toned gold shadow, is creamy, pigmented and blends out like a dream. I don't know where to purchase LA Splash in Ontario, but if I find a place, I will definitely be purchasing more of these duos.

14) LA Splash Waterproof Mascara in 'Purple Splash': This mascara was a free gift with purchase and while I have not tried it yet, I am looking forward to it as I am a big fan of coloured mascaras.

1) NARS Lip Gloss in 'Angelika': One of the highlights of walking around the West Village area of NYC was visiting the very first NARS store. Although they wouldn't let me take any photos inside, the store was super cool and included not only makeup but also a lot of Fransico Nars's favourite books and trinkets. NARS 'Angelika' lip gloss is the perfect pink gloss for Spring and Summer. It has quickly become a favourite and I know this is a product I will be purchasing over and over again.

2) MAC Lipstick in 'Candy Yum Yum' and 'Pink Nouveau': While I was visiting NYC, MAC's latest Quite Cute collection was launched so I made it a priority to get to a MAC counter and try it out. Of course, I immediately fell in love with the neon pink matte colour and had to have it. While there, I also fell in love with MAC's 'Pink Nouveau', a bright (not neon) lipstick that gives the lips a really nice, glossy look.

As I mentioned in my previous IMATS post, my favourite part of the day was getting the chance to meet some of my fellow beauty bloggers. One blogger, Kaitlynn from My Name is Kaitlynn, was so sweet and brought me an unexpected birthday gift filled with what else but makeup! Thank you Kaitlynn!!

1) Wet n Wild Mega Length Mascara: This mascara is Kaitlynn's favourite and something she talks about a lot on her blog. This product was rated 'Best Lengthening Mascara' in the Self Healthy Beauty Awards 2010. I have chosen not to open this mascara yet as I have so many others to use up, but I can't wait to try this and will definitely let you know what I think about it.

2) Four Piece Lip Gloss Charm Set: While these lipgloss set includes four really beautiful shades of gloss ranging from sparkly white to a bright pink, the cutest part of these glosses is their mini charms (including a cupcake, lollipop, purse and butterfly. They are very girly and very me.

3) Wet n Wild Idol Eyes in 'Techno': Knowing that I am a big fan of cream shadows, Kaitlynn was right on the money when she bought me this creamy, metallic purple, stick of eyeshadow. I have had good experiences with some of the other colours of this product and can't wait to try 'Techno' out.

4) Profusion 'Glitterazzi' Eyeshadow Palette: I was actually really surprised when I swatched all of the eyeshadows in this palette. They are all really pigmented (what you see is what you get), really creamy and give the eyes a beautiful sheen.

 Too Faced Palette:
Honeymoon, Ever After, Soulmates, Kiss the Bride, Bouquet Toss, I Do, Un-Veil, Cut the Cake, First Dance

 Inglot Palette:
495, 366, 60, 51, 379, 390, 501, 488, 361, 362

NYC was such a fun trip and I'm really happy I had a chance to share all of the pictures I took and products I bought while on vacation. If there are any products you would like to see me review, at more length, let me know.

Have you tried any of the products shown above? Are there any you have been dying to get your hands on? Let me know in the comment section below.
