What to Wear With Bold Lips (Guest Post)

What to Wear with Bold Lips


Hello ladies! I am so excited to be guest blogging for Alicia today! I wish her the best of luck and speedy recovery! I know things will go great!


Normally, I'm on the fashion end of things, but since this is a beauty blog I thought I would fuse the two. Today I am going to show you what to wear with a bold lip. It's always instinct to wear plain clothing when you want to rock a bold lip, but I'l show you some 'un-boring' looks that work with a bold lip.

My first outfit has print and metallic pieces that work well the lip color "Berry Queen" by Rimmel London. I would wear this outfit out to dinner.

This second outfit is my favorite, the metallic skirt steals the show! I thought the textures and colors in the outfit complemented "Outrageous" by Stila. I would wear this out for drinks with the girls! 

The last outfit is much more simple, but still fun. Although you can't tell, the top is sheer and has a romantic vibe to it.  I paired it a cute bow tie necklace and bracelets to add some shine.  The cheetah print loafers round out that accessories by adding a print. The color lip I chose is "Chatta-Box" by Mac.  I would wear this outfit for a shopping trip or out to lunch.

Surgery Update

Hey Everyone,


I just wanted to give you a quick surgery update. I won't go into all of the details in this post, but wanted to let you know that the surgery went well and I am home. They were able to band my stomach and also fix a hiatus hernia they found. I am in quite a lot of pain especially in my stomach area (think working out your abs for the first time in years x 1000), but have decided not to take the pain medication prescribed to me because it makes me sick (I would rather have pain than be sick to my stomach). 

I am already learning how different eating and drinking will be with his band, as having sips of water feels very weird. I've been sticking to ice chips so far, and today I will get to try some clear juice and some popsicles. 

Thanks again for all of your support. When I feel a little more up to it, I will let you know more details of my surgery and recovery (my sister videotaped a lot of it).

I'm Marta from a little Canadian nail-art blog called ChitChat Nails. 
It is always a real treat to be invited to do a Guest Post here.  I hope this means that Alice, and you -her awesome followers/readers- enjoy my nail-art posts. 
Alicia and I both live in London Ontario and I am thankful that, because of blogging, our paths crossed and we had some opportunities to hang out together.  I admire Alicia's beauty and makeup posts, because I am totally clueless when it comes to anything makeup.  My make-up pouch, honestly, consists of 3 eye-shadows, mascara and eyeliner, blush and foundation.  That is IT! ;)
I AM clueless when it comes to makeup BUUUUUT, I do like to dabble in nail art and nail stamping.  

Today's manicure and a neon-summery ode to Alicia and her beauty/makeup blog ;)

I painted one coat of OPI "My Boyfriend Scales Walls".  Cute polish name aside, this is my FAVORITE off-white blue-grey polish.  In fact, I own two bottles because I love it sooo much.  Anything neon is so "in" this season, but neon polish can sometimes be tricky to apply because of the runny and translucent formula.  I found that one coat of white/off white as a base helps bring out the neon-ness the polish.  

I sponged on this grey to yellow gradient using two China Glaze shades: "Pelican Grey" and "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini".  I then used one of the new Bundle Monster BM-303 with black stamping polish to create a makeup-inspired accent nail.

Have you played around with accent nails lately? I love them!!! All you need is two different shades of polish that either compliment or contrast each other and you end up with a funky manicure... Not to mention, this gives you the chance to enjoy two shades at once ;)

US Beauty Haul (Video)

Hey Everyone, 


This will probably be my last post before my lap band surgery on Friday, so I just wanted to thank all of you who have offered words of encouragement and support. I'm not exactly sure of the recovery time for this surgery (everyone seems to have a different opinion), but I have a number of awesome bloggers who have agreed to do guest posts for Funny Face Beauty while I am away. 


As a quick note, I wanted to mention that my sister Krista and I have started our own youtube channel (Funny Face Sisters) where we will be posting daily vlogs and fun videos (Krista will be taping my entire pre and post surgery experience). So if you are are a vlog lover like we are, be sure to check it out here. 


Last week Krista and I went to the US to do some shopping. There were a number of beauty items I wanted to try out (mostly drugstore), and while I didn't get everything on my list, I did pick up some great new products. Below is a video of our haul.  I think I am finally getting a good handle on filming and editing videos, so I hope you enjoy.

Hey Everyone, 


One of my favourite bloggers, Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog, does a weekly poll on her blog encouraging readers to take part. Every Monday, I will be posting my answers to her questions on my blog, and hope that you will join me by making your own post, or leaving your answers to the following questions in the comment section below.


1. Mood: Nervous. My surgery is in four days and I am starting to feel (or continuing to feel) really anxious about it. I have been trying to keep myself busy editing videos and starting a new vlog channel with my sister (check it out here). 

2. Do you prefer oceans, lakes or rivers?: I definitely prefer lakes. I am not a fan of salt water and haven't had the best experiences swimming in the ocean (almost drowning once). My cottage is right on the lake and we spend our summers swimming there. 

3. What’s one makeup tip that has been of great help to you?: I definitely like putting concealer in a triangle shape under the eyes. I have extremely dark circles and this really helps lighten up the eye area. 

4. What are three things guaranteed to make you smile?: My puppies, reality tv shows (they are just so over the top) and makeup! 

5. Regular or decaf?: I don't drink coffee, but if I did I would pick decaf. The only caffeine I like is in chocolate form (no pop or coffee for me). 

6. Have you ever played beach volleyball?: Nope. I'm not very athletic and have a fear of balls (of any size) flying at me. You should have seen me in middle school. I failed gym class one semester. 

7. When do you usually have the most energy during the day?: For some reason I tend to feel the most energy at night (around 8pm r 9pm). This isn't very conducive with sleeping unfortunately. 

8. What’s one makeup or beauty product you’ve really wanted to try but haven’t quite gotten around to yet?: I'd really like to try either the Tom Ford or Hakuhodo makeup brushes because they look so soft, but there is no way I am paying that much for a brush. Never going to happen. 

9. What’s a book you loved as a child?: I loved reading any of the babysitter club books, especially the bigger ones where they went to camp or went on a cruise. So good. I always wanted to have my own babysitting club. lol

10. Weekly goals: Just breathe.

Blindfolded Makeup Challenge Part One + Video

Hey Everyone, 


Yesterday, to cheer me up (I have been feeling down with my surgery looming), my sister agreed to do the hilarious blindfolded makeup challenge with me. 


First, it was beyond funny. I honestly couldn't stop laughing during the makeup application, and after, when I finally got to see the look I gave her. Second, it was so hard. It was like not being able to see, took away all of my sense, and I had no idea where the different parts of her face were. Finally, since I am just learning to use my new camera, the video, unfortunately, is not completely in focus. With that said, I think you will find the video absolutely hysterical, and will be totally impressed by my skills *coughs*.

Nail of the Week: Pretty In Pink

Hey Everyone, 


After checking out all of your answers to the question I asked in my most recent giveaway ('What would you like to see more of on Funny Face Beauty'), I noticed that a lot of you said you would like to see more nail related posts. So today, I have a quick nail of the week post. 

After wearing only turquoise/aqua nails for the past month, I decided to mix it up, and add a little pink (my favourite colour) to my life. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go for a light baby pink, or more of a hot/bold pink, so in true indecisive fashion, I decided to do both. 

The first colour (a very light baby pink) is Essie's 'Fiji', a gorgeous opaque polish that applies easily in two coats (nothing like OPI's Mod About You, which is so hard to apply). The second colour (a super bright neon pink) is Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic's 'Anime', an amazingly pigmented polish that applies opaquely in just one coat (I love OCC polishes). 

I love the combination of the two shades of pink together, but would probably choose to put 'Anime' on four fingers (and 'Fiji' on one finger) next time (I think hot pink is better for summer).

Monday Q&A #37

1. Mood: Not great. As those who follow my weight loss blog (you can check it out here) know, I started my pre-op diet of meal replacement shakes (gross!) and vegetables (only cucumber, lettuce, brocoli, mushrooms and asparagus) four days ago. While feeling hungry constantly is not fun, the worst symptoms of this diet have been extreme nausea, bloating, dizziness and a general lack of energy. I have 11 more days of this diet (and until I have surgery), so hopefully things get better soon. 

2. Your favorite frozen treat?: This is a cruel question for someone on this diet...haha. I can definitely say my favourite frozen treats ARE NOT the slimtime chocolate meal replacement shakes! To be serious though, I love love love ice cream especially cookies and cream, happy birthday and black raspberry bugaboo (goodbye my friends). 

3. What energizes you?: I think hanging out with good friends playing games, shopping, etc. energizes me. If I am having fun, I don't think about how tired I am, if I am having fibro pain, etc. 

4. Last time you went to the beach?: I went to the beach last week with my sister. When we are at my cottage, we usually take out our boat and go swimming in deeper (and cleaner) water, but when we were alone last week (my dad aka the captain was away), we walked down to the beach and had a picnic/swim. 

5. What makeup or beauty products do you use to fight shine?: I try to use an oil free primer and then of course, face powder (MAC's Mineralized Skinfinish Natural). 

6. What would you do if you had one extra hour of free time today?: I don't think I want an extra hour of free time today. I would like to keep busy, so my mind isn't focused on this diet. As it is, I have spent the majority of the past two days in bed, bored. Luckily, I am in the middle of a really good book (Jen Lancaster's Jeneration X) which has kept me entertained for the majority of this afternoon. 

7. Have you ever bought anything after watching an informercial?: My mom and I bought a shake weight for my sister as a joke. The TV commercials make them look really easy to use (in fact, I thought they were battery powered), but they are actually really hard to shake. 

8. Can you count how many times you’ve watched Dirty Dancing?: I don't know. I mean, it's not that I can't count high enough, but I'm not sure how many times I have seen it. I would say more than 10 and less than 50. 

9. Heroes or villains?: It depends on the way the movie is set up. Sometimes they set up the plot so that you are cheering for the villain the entire time. 

10. Weekly goals: Keep on truckin' with this diet. I know a lot of people cheat while on this (I read about people eating full meals when they weren't supposed to), but I figure if I can't stick to a diet for 2 weeks, how am I am going to stick to one the rest of my life.

MAC 'Heavenly Creature' Haul

Hey Everyone, 


Last week I took a trip to my local MAC counter to swatch some of the items from MAC's newest collection, Heavenly Creature. Of course, once I was there, and had swatched so many gorgeous things, I couldn't leave empty handed. 


While I don't like mineralized products from the majority of the beauty companies currently on the market, there is something about MAC's mineralized eyeshadows and blushes that I can't help but love. Not only are they super pigmented (well, most of the time), they go on effortlessly and, for me, last the entire day. 
With so many beautiful mineralized products to choose from, I finally decided on the following: 

MAC Mineralized Eyeshadow in 'Magnetic Attraction':
With swirls of gold, orange and plum, MAC's 'Magnetic Attraction' is a gorgeous shadow that when swirled together, creates a stunning pink-toned copper. While the shadow looks nice when all of the colours are mixed, I, personally, have been keeping the colours separate wearing the gold on the inner corner of my lid, the orange on the middle part of my lid, and the plum on the outer corner of my lid. This shadow looks great on a variety of skin tones, and because of it's warm copper hue, really makes blue eyes pop. 

MAC Mineralized Blush in 'Supernova':
With a super hot pink base, and a small swirl of golden glitter, this blush is perfect for the warmer summer months. While this blush looks somewhat scary in the pan (well for those who are adverse to bright colours), when applied with a light hand, 'Supernova' gives the cheeks a gorgeous, warm glow. Although I am not usually a fan of a lot of glitter or shimmer in my blushes, Supernova's sparkle is very finely milled, giving the face a slightly highlighted effect. 

MAC Lipstick in 'Fire Sign':

While none of the lipsticks in the Heavenly Creature collection  are mineralized (does anyone do mineralized lipsticks?), they are extremely gorgeous. After swatching several different colours, I finally decided on 'Fire Sign', a somewhat sheer and very glossy pink-toned red. Unlike a lot of the blue toned reds MAC makes, it is my belief that this lipstick would look great on both warmer and cooler skin tones. If you are in the market for a red lipstick, but don't want anything too bold, this is the lipstick for you.

I Love Arm Candy

Our Current Favourites (Friends Edition)

Hey Everyone, 


Usually when I post a video, I don't give any commentary on my blog posts. I figure that those who want to watch a video will watch it, and those who prefer to read blog posts, will skip it. This time is a little different. This 'Current Favourites' video was filmed in HD quality on my new camera (I got in May but was too scared to use it until now), features two of my close friends (who were complete naturals on camera), and, finally, was edited to look a little more 'professional' than my previous videos (trust me, there are still some mistakes).

1. Mood: Good. My sister and I spent the day at the beach and then filmed 'The Sister Tag' earlier this evening. If my sister let's me post it, I think people will definitely get a laugh out of it. We are less of the mushy sister type, and rather spent half the video making fun of, and fighting with, one another. 

2. Your favorite sandwich?: I like either PB&J on fresh white bread, or a grilled cheese sandwich with 'American' cheese (read cheese slices). 

3. What’s your lucky number?: I have two lucky numbers: 13 and 11. 

4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?: I used to do everything I could to keep certain friends 'happy', and felt like I was walking on eggshells half the time. Now that I have cut those people out of my life, I don't worry making my friends happy, I worry about making myself happy. 

5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?: Probably a good 10+ years ago. I used to like rides, but never liked roller coasters. I'm not a fan of that 'stomach dropping' feeling you get while riding one. 

6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?: At first I thought this question asked what I liked about my neighbour, and trust me when I say I was seriously pressed for answers (my sister suggested I write "that she didn't call the cops when our dog bit her husband"). I like that my neighbourhood is quiet, small, close to a lot of stores and restaurants (well, close enough), and relatively safe. 


7. When was the last time you got your hair did?: I got my hair done right before I left for Nashville (so the beginning of June?). I seriously need to get it done in the next couple of weeks, as my blonde roots are starting to make me look bald. 

8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?: I was probably in grade 11 when I actually started paying attention to, and doing, my makeup. I think I was a bit of a late bloomer, but have certainly made up for it. 

9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?: I definitely prefer shopping for makeup alone. When I have a friend or family member there I always feel rushed, because I know they aren't as interested in the products as I am, and probably don't want to spend their entire day at Sephora. 

10. Weekly goals: I have been trying to get tickets for the Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan concert in Toronto this week. So far, I have had really bad luck. I thought I had finally found the tickets today, but after agreeing to a price, and a meeting area, the guy stopped answering my emails. I have not given up though. I will do everything in power to be at that concert on Thursday.
