Currently Coveting

Hey Everyone,

When it comes to beauty and fashion, my 'covet list' is always a mile long. Shopping with me, you will hear 'OMG, I love that!' coming out of my mouth every 30 seconds (seriously, my Dad never understands how I can 'love' everything). I thought it would be fun to share my current covet list with you, and would love for you to let me know what items you are currently coveting. After all, I always need new items to add to mine).

 Michael Kors 'Selma Bag':
White, navy, pink, I love them all. These bags are super chic, super pretty and, unfortunately, super expensive (running close to $400 CND). To be honest, this probably isn't the most practical bag for me, as my back can usually only handle 'cross-body' bags, but come on, a girl can still dream.

Mint Green Iphone Case with Rose Gold Studs:
To know me is to know that I absolutely love, both rose gold and mint green, so this iphone case was pretty much made for me. This particular case is sold on etsy for $50 USD, which for me, is just too much money to spend on a rubber case.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick in 'Fuschia in Rage':
I am a sucker for lipstick/lipbalm hybrids, so I was really excited when I saw that YSL added a new formula to their lipstick line. 'Fuschia in Rage', a bold purple with a slight pink undertone is, in my opinion, the perfect colour for Summer. Unfortunately, on my last trip to Toronto I searched everywhere for this colour without any luck, and was told it was only being sold in the US.

Rebecca Minkoff Four Zip Bag in 'Purple':
With my 31st Birthday (OMG, I feel old) less than two weeks away I have asked my family for the Rebecca Minkoff Four Zip Bag in 'Purple'. This cross body bag is not only totally cute, it is the perfect size for all of my things, and not too large to carry with a bad back. I do currently own, and use, one of the Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac purses and can definitely say her bags are high quality and not overly expensive.

Prada Baroque Sunglasses
I am absolutely obessed with round sunglasses for Spring and Summer, and just can't get over how beautiful Prada's new Baroque sunglasses are (look at the detail). While these are definitely not my usual $12 Aldo glasses, a friend of mine carries these glasses in his store, The Spectacle Company (check out the website, the store is stunning), and I do plan on buying myself a pair if, and when, I hit my 50 lbs weight loss mark (these last few pounds don't want to come off).

Illamasqua Cream Blush in 'Lies' and 'Rude':
I am absolutely obsessed with the Illamasqua brand at the moment, and had to stop myself from buying the entire display on my last trip to the Sephora at The Toronto Eaton Centre (they just started carrying the brand). I've heard amazing things about their cream blushes and definitely have my eye on 'Lies', a light shimmering pink and 'Rude', a bold coral-orange.

Alexander McQueen Rose Gold Skull Bracelet:
When I showed my friend Kerri a picture of this bracelet, she said it was perfect for me as I pretty much only wear Rose Gold jewelry and have a small obsession with skulls. Unfortunately, this bracelet costs a whopping $300 USD, a price I wouldn't pay even if I was made of money. I am, therefore, on the lookout for a good knockoff (if you know of one, be sure to let me know in the comment section below).

Sephora Collection Eyeshadow in 'Snakeskin Dress':
An olive green with shimmering gold undertones, 'Snakeskin Dress' is definitely one of the prettiest eyeshadows I have ever swatched. Trying to be a good girl and stop buying makeup I don't need, I have yet to pick this colour up, but based on my completely lack of willpower in the past, this will probably be added to my collection in the next couple of months.

Are you currently coveting any of the items on my list? Are there any items you think I should add to my list? What are you currently coveting? Be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Milani Color Statement Lipsticks/Lipliners: Oranges and Reds (Review + Swatches)

Hey Everyone,

As I mentioned in two previous posts, Milani Cosmetics recently released their new Color Statement line featuring thirty lipsticks and eight lipliners in a variety of eye catching colours. The lipsticks, which are formulated with a blend of Vitamins A, C and E are, for the most part, super creamy, extremely well pigmented and, despite their thicker consistency, fairly moisturizing.

Below is my review of the new orange/red lipstick and lipliners from the new Color Statement collection (you can see my review of the pink/coral line here, and my review of the berry/plum line here):

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '01-Sweet Nectar' (Cream):
A super bright orange, with subtle yellow undertones, Milani's 'Sweet Nectar' is definitely not for the faint of heart. While this super creamy, very opaque colour looks best on darker or more olive skin tones, paired with winged liner and heavy black mascara, this pale-skinned girl will definitely be rocking 'Sweet Nectar' this summer.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '03-Orange Gina' (Pearl):
A medium orange with yellow undertones and finely milled gold and orange shimmer, 'Orange Gina' is just not my cup of tea. Not only does this 'pearl' formula lipstick feel slightly gritty on the lips, it's not very moisturizing, draws attention to fine lines on the lips and is very difficult to pull off with my skin tone.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '04-High Voltage' (Vinyl):
A bright red with slight orange undertones, this gorgeous lipstick is one of my favourites from the Color Statement Collection. While elegant enough for night, this multi-tasking red lipstick also works nicely for softer, day time looks. Like the other 'vinyl' lipsticks in this collection, 'High Voltage' is  creamy, smooth, fairly moisturizing, gives the lips a nice sheen and applies opaquely with just one swipe.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '05-Red Label' (Cream):
A blue-toned, cherry red, 'Red Label' is, in my opinion, the quintessential red lipstick for any skin tone, age, etc. This extremely pigmented lipstick is smooth, creamy, easy to apply, very moisturizing, and definitely one I would recommend adding to your wish list.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '06-Cherry Crave' (Metallic):
A deep, cherry red with slight brown undertones and finely milled iridescent red shimmer, 'Cherry Crave' gives lips a slight metallic sheen. While this lipstick is nicely pigmented, very creamy and quite moisturizing, I don't it's like the slight brown undertones, and can imagine someone twice my age wearing it.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '07-Best Red' (Matte):
A deep cherry-red with blue undertones, 'Best Red' is almost identical to 'Red Label'. Unfortunately, due to its matte formula, I don't find it to be as moisturizing or smooth as the cream formula. So, unless you are looking for a matte red in particular, I would suggest grabbing 'Red Label' instead.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '08-Ruby Valentine' (Vinyl):
A deep crimson red with both blue and brown undertones, this vinyl formula lipstick feels soft and buttery and gives lips a gorgeous sheen. Very highly pigmented, this lipstick applies opaquely in just one swipe, leaving lips with a slight stain even after it wears off.

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in '02-True Red' (Cream):
A deep cherry red with blue undertones, this creamy, super pigmented lip liner looks great paired with 'Red Label', 'Best Red', and 'Ruby Valentine'.

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in '03-Nude' (Cream):
A creamy brown-nude with slight pink undertones, this highly pigmented lip liner works beautifully with both nude and brown lipsticks, but doesn't make much sense paired with the orange/red lipsticks from this particular collection.

Milani's new Color Statement lipsticks and lipliners can be found in both Canadian (Lawtons, Loblaws and Walmart) and US (CVS, Target, Walgreens, Walmart and K-Mart) drugstores.

Have you tried any of Milani's new Color Statement lipsticks and lipliners? Do you want to? Which of the lipsticks above would you most like to try? Be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Black and White Polka Dot Nails

Hey Everyone,

After having my nails painted by Essie's lead nail artist, Rita Remark, earlier this week (check out the silhouette manicure she gave me here), I was inspired to try another nail art look. So, when I went to get my acrylic nails filled yesterday, I brought along essence's 'Nail Art Duo Stylist' nail dotting tool, and asked the lady who does my nails for a graphic black and white polka dot print.

The result, in my opinion is pretty awesome. Using O.P.I's 'Onyx', a gorgeous. high-shine black polish, as a base, my nail lady used Sally Hansen's 'White On', a creamy white polish and the 'Nail Art Duo Stylist' to create various sized dots on my nails.

While, I personally am not the best when it comes to doing my own nails (I am lucky if I can paint them), the dotting tool is actually quite easy to use (dip the end of the tool into your desired polish, and then dot it on your nail), and I definitely think I would be able to give myself a similar looking manicure.

Do you like the look of my black and white polka dot nails? Have you used a dotting tool before? What are some of your favourite nail art looks? Any you suggest I try next? Be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Silhouette Nails with Essie 'Mesmerize' and 'Blue Rhapsody'

Hey Everyone,

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the Allied Beauty Association Show in Toronto (think IMATS for hair and skincare), where I received a manicure from Essie's lead Canadian nail artist, Rita Remark. Having just finished designing five days worth of runway ready nails for Toronto's World Mastercard Fashion Week, Rita gave me a glimpse at one of the latest nail art trends to hit the streets, silhouette nails.

Using Essie's 'Mesmerize', a gorgeous, creamy royal-blue, Rita painted my nails with three coats of polish, while giving me her top three insider nail painting tips:

1) Always paint your dominant hand first. This way you don't have to worry about ruining the fresh manicure on the hand you have more difficulty painting with.

2) When painting your nails, stabilize your pinky on a table (or whatever surface you are using), as it gives you more control over the brush and allows you to paint your nails with more even, less messy, strokes.

3) To remove stubborn glitter or textured nail polish, use a 100% pure acetone polish remover. If you have gel or acrylic nails (like myself), you can still use a pure acetone remover, just be sure not to soak the nails for too long.

Next, using Essie's 'Blue Rhapsody', a metallic blue-silver, Rita painted the middle of each nail, ensuring that 'Mesmerize' was still visible along the outer edges of the nails, thereby creating a silhouette-like look.

Personally I love the new silhouette nail art trend and, while I'm not the best when it comes to painting my own nails (that's an understatement), actually feel pretty confident about achieving this nail art look on my own.

What do you think of the new silhouette nail art trend? Will you be trying it out on your own nails? Be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick/Lipliners: Berries and Plums (Review+Swatches)

Hey Everyone,

As I mentioned in a previous post, Milani Cosmetics recently released their new Color Statement line featuring thirty lipsticks and eight lipliners. The new lipsticks which are formulated with Vitamins A, C, and E, are incredibly smooth, insanely well pigmented and, with the exception of a few colours, nice and moisturizing.

Below is review of the new berry/plum lipsticks and lipliners from the new Milani Color Statement collection (you can see my review of the pink/coral lip products here):

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '17-Plum Rose' (Cream):
A deep rose with brown undertones, this gorgeous lipstick is, for me, the perfect colour for fall. Like all of the cream lipsticks in this collection, 'Plum Rose' has a somewhat thick consistency resulting in a super creamy, extremely pigmented and micely moisturizing lipstick.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '19-Raspberry Rush' (Metallic):
A bold fuchsia pink with a blue-toned metallic purple sheen, this lipstick is gorgeous for Spring, and definitely my favourite colour from the berry/plum collection. Like all of the metallic lipsticks in this collection, 'Raspberry Rush' is a little drying, but using a moisturizing balm before application makes this unique, and totally stunning, lipstick comfortable on the lips.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '20-Uptown Mauve' (Cream):
A deep berry-plum with slight red undertones, this lipstick is incredibly well pigmented and very opaque (a little goes a long way). Like the rest of the cream lipsticks in this collection, 'Uptown Mauve' is creamy, smooth and easy to apply. While some of the other colours in this collection are better suited to one particular season, this is one colour that looks great all year long.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '21-Sangria' (Matte):
A dark plum with red undertones, this matte lipstick applies smoothly and opaquely without drawing attention to fine lines on the lips. For those who find this lipstick too dark, it can be applied sheerly for a gorgeous, slightly vampy fall look. Unlike a lot of matte lipsticks I have tried, 'Sangria' is not at all drying and actually sits quite comfortably on the lips throughout the day.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '22-Chilled Brandy' (Shimmer):
A deep brown lipstick with rose gold/copper shimmer, this is one colour I just can't get on board with. While highly pigmented, this opaque lipstick draws attention to fine lines, has a somewhat gritty texture, and feels quite dry on the lips.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '24-Black Cherry' (Cream):
A deep wine with strong black cherry undertones (the name fits the colour perfectly), 'Black Cherry' is the epitome of 'vampy', giving the lips a somewhat 'gothic' look. While I personally don't see myself reaching for this colour very often, those who do like a vampier look will appreciate how creamy, moisturizing and opaque this lipstick is.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in '34-Violet Volt' (Metallic):
A bright blue-toned purple with a metallic blue sheen, this is definitely one of the most unique lipstick colours I have ever tried. While this colour is not everyone's cup of tea, it looks great on darker skin tones, and when sheered out, makes for a great 'night out on the town' lip look.

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in '05-Brandy' (Cream):
A medium-toned chocolate brown, this creamy, very pigmented, and  super opaque liner is not one I see myself reaching for very often (my skin tone just does not work with a brown liner).

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in '06-Fuchsia' (Cream):
A gorgeous deep berry-plum with red undertones, this creamy, easy to apply lip liner looks great paired with 'Uptown Mauve', 'Sangria' and 'Raspberry Rush'.

Fashion Magazine Beauty Panel Look #3: Day to Night Makeup

Hey Everyone,

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was recently asked by Fashion Magazine to be one of their online Beauty Panel contributors. Basically, every week, panelists are asked a series of questions, and those who choose to participate can answer questions via a series of pictures or a tutorial-style video. Our third challenge was to answer the question:

How do you transition your hair and makeup from day to night?

When taking my makeup from day to night, I like to make it as easy as possible. Rather than remove what I already have on and start the makeup process all over again, I use the following three steps to achieve the perfect nighttime look.

Step 1: Run a dark brown or grey eyeshadow into the crease of the eye, onto the outer 1/3 of the eyelid, and along the lower lash line. This gives eyes definition, as well as a soft, smoky effect.
Step 2: Run a dark brown or black waterproof, kohl eyeliner along both the upper and lower waterline. While this step can make eyes look slightly smaller, it quickly adds drama to any look.
Step 3: Add a bold lip using your favorite bright lipstick. Be sure to use a similarly coloured, or slightly darker, lip liner to help define the lips’ natural shape and ensure that your lipstick stays in place all night long.
