Exclusive Preview: Nine New Products From L'Oreal

Hey Everyone,

Last week, my friend Kerri and I drove into Toronto for an event held by L'Oreal Canada, in which they let us preview some of the new items they will be adding to their permanent collection. After a small presentation explaining the technology being used in the making of their products, we had a chance to get our hands dirty, and swatch/play with all of the new nine new lip, face and eye products. L'Oreal will be adding these items to their already extensive line in late June or early July 2012. While I have yet to try all of them (we were sent home with a goody bag), I have tried (or have had friends try) many of these new items. Below is an introduction to the new members of the L'Oreal line, as well as my initial thoughts on some of the products.

L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator

Shades: light and medium

Price: $23.99 CND

Come the end of June (or beginning of July), L'Oreal will be launching, not one, but two new BB Creams. The first BB cream, which 'evens, perfects, protects, moisturizes and illuminates' the skin, is made with L'Oreal patented Micro Pearls which give the skin a natural looking, radiant glow. With an SPF of 15 and Vitamin B3, the Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator also works to diminish the appearance of dark spots.

My Thoughts:

While this BB cream wasn't included in our gift bags, I did get a chance to play around with it at the event, and have to say that it is amazing! The Youth Code BB cream has a surprisingly full coverage finish (something I need with my acne scars ) and the Micro Pearls in the BB Cream really do give the skin a gorgeous dewy glow. I will for sure be purchasing this when it makes its way to the drugstore.

L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream

Shades: Fair, Light, Medium, Dark

Price: $16.99

The second BB Cream being introduced to the L'Oreal line is the Magic Skin Beautifier . According to L'Oreal, this BB cream 'primes, perfects, hydrates, and corrects all-in-one step'. While this BB cream comes out of the tube white, it contains L'oreal's 'Beautifying Beads' (small tiny brown beads) which self adjust to create the perfect colour for your individual skin tone. Packed with Vitamin E, this BB cream also helps keep the skin hydrated for up to 24 hours.

My Thoughts:

This BB cream was included in our gift bags, but because it was a little too dark for my skin tone, I gave it to my friend Lisa and asked for her feedback. Here is what she said

"I really love it, it is super moisturizing, light and has a nice coverage. I usually hate foundation, because I hate the feeling of something on my skin, so I love this, especially for summer."

I also had the chance to play around with this BB cream at the L'Oreal event, and while it doesn't have as full of a coverage as the other BB Cream, it is nice and light and gives the skin a nice subtle glow. I love that it comes out white, but then adjusts to your individual skintone. The medium shade (the one I gave Lisa) was too dark for me, but both the fair and light shades, were able to adjust to the skin tone on the back of my hand.

True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Foundation:

Shades: 14 shades from Porcelain to Cocoa

Price: $18.99 CND

L'Oreal's newest liquid foundation makes a big claim, guaranteeing a 'luminous, shine-free and visibly healthier skin in just four weeks'. Containing 40% pure water, this foundation ensures that the skin remains hydrated and fresh throughout the day. With an SPF of 20, and 'technology that optimizes light reflection and intensifies luminosity', this foundation helps reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.

My Thoughts:

To be honest, I am still waiting to test this foundation out on a friend, as it is slightly too dark for me. I have, however, had a chance to play around with it on the back of my hand, and agree that it gives the skin a very luminous finish.

L'Oreal Visble Lift Repair Absolute Compact Foundation

Shades: 12 shades from Soft Ivory to Classic Tan
Price: $18.99 CND

L'Oreal's newest compact foundation is said to reverse the signs of aging 'by providing full coverage to reduce the appearance of fine lines and dark spots'. This foundation, which contains Retinol A, helps brighten and even out skintone for a more youthful, radiant appearance.

My Thoughts:

Unfortunately, I didn't get much of a chance to play around with this new foundation at the L'Oreal event (there were so many amazing things to look at). I am hoping to give it to a friend to test out, so I will be sure to update you on their thoughts.

L'Oreal Colour Richie Caresse Lipcolour

Shades: 12 shades

Price: $12.99 CND

L'Oreal's newest lip product falls somewhere between a lipstick, a lipgloss and a lip balm. The new Lipcolours, which contain 50% less heavy wax than traditional lipsticks, help moisturize the lips while giving them a 'sultry translucent colour, weightless feel and ultra modern shine'.

My Thoughts:

I love the new Caresse Lipcolours as they remind me a lot of YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Lipsticks (at a much less expensive price). The Caresse Lipcolours come in a variety of great shades, feel absolutely weightless on the lips (it feels like you have nothing on) , are very moisturizing and have a great colour pay off. I think these are definitely worth trying out, and I imagine they will be flying off the shelves come July. I received several of these in my gift bag, and will be including some of the shades in an upcoming giveaway.

Voluminous Power 24H Mascara

Shades: 6 shades including waterproof and regular

Price: $11.99 CND

L'Oreal will be introducing two new mascaras to their permanent line this summer, including this collagen-enriched mascara which helps plump lashes creating a volumized effect (15x lash impact) that lasts 24 hours.

My Thoughts:

Although the claim of 24 hours sounds like a gimmick to me (I don't like when companies put a time claim on their products), I do have to say that I really like this mascara. This mascara definitely makes my lashes appear thicker and when used in combination with L'Oreal's newest lash lengthening mascara, I absolutely love the effect. If you want volume, definitely check out this mascara. If you want length, this may not be the mascara for you.

L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Black Laquer Mascara

Shades: Black Laquer

Price: $11.99

Being introduced to the Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara is a new shade, 'Black Laquer', which 'provides vinyl-sheen, creating lashes that are ultra black, ultra-glossy and ultra-outrageous'.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely love this mascara. It, without a doubt, lengthens my lashes giving them a somewhat false lash look (they were short to begin with). I have been using this mascara for the past week, and have to say that I am liking it better than my more expensive 'They're Real' mascara from Benefit Cosmetics. Combined with L'Oreal's new Voluminous Power Mascara, my lashes look unreal and pretty amazing.

Infallible Lacquer Liner 24H Eyeliner

Shades: Blackest Black and Slate

Price: $12.99CND

Gel liner lovers will be rejoicing when L'Oreal brings out their first ever gel early this summer. This liner, combined with the infalliable longer wear technology last for 24 hours, giving 'a unique black-laquer effect that's incredibly dimensional- never flat or ashy'. The new gel liner also comes with a small precision brush for perfect application.

My Thoughts:

To be honest, I have yet to try this products. However, my friend Kerri, who attended the L'Oreal event with me, has been using it ever since and says that it goes on smoothly and lasts throughout the day (even after having two naps). I personally prefer a much more angled brush. However, a lot of the ladies who attended the event (including Kerri) loved the look of this brush, and Eddie Malter, L'Oreal head makeup artist, said it was his all time favourite eyeliner brush.

La Colour Infalliable Eyeshadow- New Dual-Pigment Shades

Shades: Metallic Lilac, Magnetic Coral, Innocent Turquoise, Sassy Chamallow, Tender Caramel and Pepsy Coral

Price: $10.99 CND

L'Oreal is introducing six brand new shades to their popular Infalliable Eyeshadow line. Using 'duo chrome technology', the new shades have a combination of two different but complementary pigments, which, when applied, give the eyes a multi-dimensional appearance. Like all of the Infalliable shadows, the new shades feature a technology that resists creasing and rubbing, and lasts for 24 hours.

My Thoughts:

I am a huge L'Oreal Infalliable Eyeshadow fan, as I find they are amazingly pigmented, last a very long time and do not smudge. The new colours are beyond amazing (so pretty) and I love the multi-dimensional effect created by having two complementary pigments in each shadow. I can't wait for these to come out, as I will definitely be getting my hands on Sassy Chamallow, Metallic Lilac and Innocent Turquoise.

Hey Everyone,

One of my favourite bloggers, Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog, does a weekly poll on her blog encouraging readers to take part. Every Monday, I will be posting my answers to her questions on my blog, and hope that you will join me by making your own post, or leaving your answers to the following questions in the comment section below.

1. Mood: Ridiculously overheated! Okay, okay, I know that is not technically a 'mood', but it is so freakin' hot outside today. I can't even deal with it. I spent a large majority of my day sitting outside filming a video, and almost melted. Luckily, the video doesn't show my face which was seriously dripping with sweat. Yuck!!

2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?: I think I would have to go with the faux fur vest. With a pair of dark jeans and a simple black shirt, I think I could totally rock the purple vest. Either way, it sounds much better than the poncho!

3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?: Including hair and makeup? With a shower, doing my hair (not necessarily blow drying it), and quick makeup I could probably be ready in 20-25 minutes.
4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?: It really depends on the night. These days my body doesn't seem to want to get more than 7 hours of sleep (and that's on a good day). If I fall asleep around midnight, I am wide awake by 6:30-7:00am.

5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?: I don't have a significant other, so no, he does nothing that drives me crazy.

6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?: Not that I can remember. I was a really good dancer in highschool/college (I haven't danced in forever, so I don't know how I am now), but I don't remember any battles.

7. What’s the last book you finished?: I just finished the Hunger Games trilogy. I didn't think I would like them at first, but once I got into them, I couldn't put them down. Currently, I am reading the newest Sophie Kinsella book called 'I've got your number'. It's really good (I love all of her books) and should be finished reading it in a day or so. After that, there are a couple of memoirs I really want to read. ***Okay, totally unrelated side note. Has anyone been watching the new season of Keeping Up With the Khardashians? Kris (the mom), keeps talking about her new memoir, but she called it a 'memoi' (leaving the r off). It has been driving me absolutely up the wall!! The 'r' is not silent Kris! Even her kids keep telling her she's not saying it properly.

8. What’s the plan for today?: There's not much day left. Tonight I need to do some laundry (boring), edit a video (not so boring) and, of course, watch some trashy reality TV (not at all boring).

9. What was your favorite TV show when you were a kid?: I think it was probably 'Beverly Hills 90210'. I know that's not really a kid's show, but I remember my dad letting me stay up late for the two hour season premiers and finales when I was in grade two. Hmmm...this might explain my obsession with trashy TV...

10. Weekly goals: GET READY FOR NASHVILLE!!!!!!!!!! Only six days until we leave for CMA Fest, and I need to start packing. I have all of my makeup packed (a video of what I am bringing should be up in the next couple of days), but need to get started on my clothing, jewelry, etc.

I Love Neon: These Are a Few of My Favourite Neon Things

Hey Everyone,

As you may have noticed, from several of my recent posts, I am currently having a love affair with neon. Neon lipsticks, neon nail polish, neon accessories: If it's neon, I want to own it...NOW! In the hopes of getting you to also fall in love with summer's latest and hottest trend, I thought I would share some of my current favourite neon products including nail polish, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow and accessories.

1) Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Polish in 'Radiate':
Just one coat of this super bright red-coral polish gives the nails an elegant, and more reserve pop of neon colour (perfect for the work place)

2) Essie Nail Polish in 'Bright Tights':
This crazy bright neon orange polish is perfect for those ladies who aren't afraid of standing out in a crowd. This polish is a little sheer, requiring three coats for maximum coverage.

3) Essie Nail Polish in 'Pink Parka':
Essie's Pink Parka is the perfect shade of hot neon pink, giving the nails a super 'girly look' in just two coats.

4) China Glaze Nail Polish in 'Celtic Sun':
This crazy bright, neon yellow polish looks amazing with a nice summer tan. Unfortunately, this polish is very thin and requires a good 3-4 coats for a semi-opaque finish.

5) China Glaze Nail Polish in 'Turned Up Turquoise':
This gorgeous, deep turquoise polish with iridescent light turquoise shimmer applies in just one coat, giving the nails a super chic look.

1) Joe Fresh Cream Blush in 'Melon':
This stunning, neon-coral, cream blush can be blended lightly into the cheeks for a slightly colourful look, or built up for a more daring look.

2) NARS Powder Blush in 'Desire':
This crazy bright pink blush from NARS, is one of my all time favourites. Although this blush looks somewhat frightening in the pan, with the right brush, and a light hand, it looks great on almost all skin tones.

3) MAC Cremeblend Blush in 'Florida':
This deep fuchsia-pink, cream blush is very smooth and creamy, making it easy to blend into the cheeks for a bold pop of colour.

4) MAC Powder Blush in 'Full Fushcia':
This bright, super creamy, fuschia blush, with blue iridescent shimmer, looks amazing on darker skin tones. While lighter skin tones can pull it off, be careful how much product you put on your blush (clown cheeks are not so in).

5) MAC Powder Blush in 'Bite of An Apple':
This limited edition MAC blush gives the cheeks a nice hint of coral-red colour, and looks great on both light and dark skin tones. Unfortunately this blush isn't very pigmented, requiring you to use a heavy hand.

1) MAC Lipstick in 'Morange': This electric orange lipstick is certainly not for the faint of heart, but if you are brave enough to wear it, it looks amazing when paired with a fresh face and winged eyeliner.

2) YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in 'Succulent Pomegranate': I am absolutely in love with YSL's Volupte Sheer Candy Lip Balms, and Succulent Pomegranate, a sheer neon pink colour, is no exception. This colour is perfect for those who desire a pop of neon colour but require a more reserved look.

3) Elizabeth Arden Lipstick in 'Neoclassic Coral':
This super pigmented coral-red lipstick is one of my all time favourite shades for summer. I, personally, like to wear this lipstick with a smoky brown eye and nude cheek. Beautiful!

4) MAC Lipstick in 'Candy Yum Yum':
This limited edition HOT PINK lipstick is definitely the brightest lip product in my collection. Unfortunately, due to its somewhat drying texture, I don't wear this colour very often (hey, it's still pretty to look at!)

5) MAC Lipstick in 'Fusion Pink':
This extremely pigmented, magenta lipstick with iridescent pink shimmer has been in my collection for quite a while. Surprisingly, it wasn't until this pas year that I discovered how much I love it. This lipstick has a gorgeous sheen and, surprisingly, leaves the lips feeling nice and moisturized.

1) MAC Pigment Colour Powder in 'Magenta Madness':
Imagine the hottest pink you have ever seen, then multiply it's 'neon-ness' (yes, it's my blog, I can make up words) by ten. You now have MAC's pigment colour powder in Magenta Madness, a crazy hot pink pigment that can be used on the eyes, lips, cheeks, and nails.

2) Sleek Makeup 'Acid' Eyeshadow Palette:
I love all of Sleek's eyeshadow palettes. Not only are they inexpensive, all of their shadows are very pigmented and easy to blend. One of my all time favourite shadow palettes from Sleek is their 'Acid' palette which includes four, crazy bright neon shades (green, pink, orange and yellow). If you want to add some neon to your makeup collection, but don't want to spend too much money, this palette is for you!

3) Barry M Dazzle Dust in 'Yellow':
I know, I know, technically this bright yellow dazzle dust from Barry M is not neon, but it's bright, it's fun and gosh darn-it, people like it! Packed full of silver glitter, I like to wear this yellow shadow on the inner corner of my eyes for a subtle pop of colourful shimmery prettiness.

4) Sugarpill Eyeshadow in 'After Party':
Although I am not much of a blue eyeshadow girl (blue shadows usually makes my eyes look super red), I can't help but love this creamy, super blend-able, bright blue shadow. This is my first eyeshadow from Sugar Pill Cosmetics, and, if they are all as pigmented as this one, I will definitely be buying some more in the near future.

5) Inglot Colourful Palette:
As I have mentioned in several posts, I am absolutely smitten with Inglot's eyeshadows. Not only are they fairly inexpensive, they are so pigmented and creamy, making them, in my opinion, a better choice than MAC's more expensive shadow line. With a bright blue, a bright yellow and several coral shades, my colourful Inglot palette helps create beautiful neon eye looks.

1) Rebecca Minkoff Electric Pink Mini Mac Clutch:
I bought this super cute, electric pink purse on my recent trip to NYC. This is the perfect summer purse as it is large enough to carry my essentials (lip balm, sunscreen, cell phone) and adds a nice pop of colour to any outfit. I am absolutely in love with the Rebecca Minkoff collection of purses, and have already purchased another one for fall (pictures coming soon).

2) Forever 21 Lime Green and Wicker Purse:
I bought this small cross body purse from Forever 21 a couple of months ago and have been using it regularly ever since. I love that this purse has a mix of neutral (the wicker) and bright (the lime green detailing), and think it's the perfect alternative to some of the more expensive neon purses currently on the market (hello Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and Michael Kors).

3) Lula Turquoise Wallet:
At only $10 CND (I'm sorry I can't remember where I bought it), this wallet is the perfect summer accessory, especially since I often choose to leave my purse at home, and only carry my wallet around while shopping.

1) Ardene Rose Stud Earrings:

These super cute rose earrings are a great way to incorporate neon into your look, while maintaining a more professional appearance. I personally like to pair these earrings with a simple black dress, or dressy black capris and top.

2) H&M Coral and Pink Earrings:
These long, very flashy, earrings are definitely not for those who shy away from standing out in a crowd. These earrings are BOLD, and would look great paired with a pair of colourful pink jeans and a flowy black top.

3) Forever 21 Turquoise Bow Ring:
Paired with any of the neon nail polishes mentioned above, this cute turquoise bow ring makes for the perfect girly accessory.

4) Aldo Gold, Lime Green and Pink Necklace:
The moment I saw this multi-coloured neon necklace (a birthday present from my friend Jenny), I fell in love. I love how this necklaces pairs two bright coloured chains with a more neutral gold chain, as I think it makes the necklaces a little more classy.

2) If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?: I think my dog, Dolce, does understand a lot, he just chooses to ignore things like 'don’t bark at every person that walks by', 'don’t try to viciously attack our other dog when he gets too close to your food', etc. I guess I would want him to understand that I am the boss (not him), but I doubt very much that is ever going to happen. He's so cute, that we let him get away with everything.

 3) Do you do anything in particular to celebrate the start of summer?: We usually start spending a lot of time at my cottage. That is when I, officially, know it is summer. Unfortunately, my cottage is currently under renovation, so we won’t be spending any time there until, at least, the end of June.

4) Eyes/Lips/Cheeks? : A the moment I am not wearing any makeup (I am actually still in my pj’s), so I’ll do yesterday’s makeup.

 6) A song that always puts you in a good/better mood?: Oh man, there are too many to name. I guess the one I get most excited by, when it comes on the radio, is Zac Brown Band’s ‘Keep Me In Mind”.

7) Do you keep a pair of casual shoes by the front door?: Not usually. We have a shoe cupboard at our garage door, and I keep all of my shoes there.

8) Tell me about your weekend: What did you do?: It was a nice long weekend (today is a holiday here). Saturday I got my nails done, went bathing suit shopping (it surprisingly went well), and went out for dinner with my friend Kerri. Yesterday, I hung out with my sisters and two of our friends, and then went out for ice cream after dinner. Today, I relaxed and then worked out (more stretching than working out really) with my trainer.

 9) What scent are you wearing?: I don’t have any perfume on at the moment, but if I did I would be wearing either ‘SJP NYC’  or Justin Bieber’s ‘Someday’.

10. Weekly goals: I have really been slacking off when it comes to blogging, and I need to get back on track. I am heading to Toronto for the day tomorrow, but will hopefully start posting on a daily basis, starting Wednesday.

1) Mood: Extremely tired!! My sister and I drove to the US yesterday for three days of shopping ~~hell~~ fun. We are heading to Nashville in less than three weeks, and since my sister lost a ton of weight (and I gained a ton of weight), we need new clothes. Unfortunately this hasn't been my best trip. I've had a hard time finding fashionable plus size clothing (everything looks like it was made for a 60 year old), and I hurt my back yesterday meaning I am having a hard time walking. Tomorrow is our last day so I'm hopeful things will turn around.

2. Three things on your bucket list?: Fly on a private jet, eat a homemade italian meal in an olive grove in Tuscany, and go on safari in Africa (my parents are currently in Africa on vacation and I am JEALOUS!!).

3. If tattoos only lasted a year, would you be more/less likely to get one?: Definitely more likely, although I already have three. If they only lasted a year, I would be more inclined to get ones that were 'cool' now, but not something I would want on my body at the age of 80.

4. Something that drives you nuts?: People who don't know how to think outside of the box.

5. What’s the number one quality you value most in a pencil eyeliner?: It needs to be soft and creamy, and not tug on my eyelid.

6. Three things that inspire you?: I am honestly so tired, I can't even think of three things. I guess I get inspired by great music and lyrics, beauty blogs, vlogs, pictures, etc. and travelling to new places.

7. Does the sound of silence make you uncomfortable?: It depends on the situation. If I am by myself relaxing, no. If I am with a group of people who don't know each other very well, and therefore don't have much to say, yes.

8. What’s one sentence that summarizes 2012 for you so far?: For once, I am cautiously optimistic.

9. Your best experience on public transportation?: I don't know that I have a best experience, but one of the most memorable was my first ride on a NYC subway. A guy walked in to our car, introduced himself and started making up rap songs about all of the people around him. It was like something out of a movie.

10. Weekly goals: Find clothes to wear to Nashville that don't look like were made for my grandma!

DIY: Nail Polish Necklace

Hey Everyone,

I am back with another another DIY necklace tutorial, this one just as easy as the last. After seeing several online tutorials on how to spice up old, outdated jewelry using nail polish, I knew I had to give it a try. With just a few simple steps (shown below), you too can be sporting your own nail polish jewels.

1) Find an old, boring piece of jewelry you want to transform:

I found this somewhat tacky 'dimaond' necklace at Ardene. This style of necklace is definitely not one I would normally wear but, at 3 for $10, I decided to try my luck at sprucing it up with a little nail polish.

2) Choose the nail polish colours you will be using on your necklace:

I wanted to make my necklace super fun and bright, and stick with my 'I love neon' them. I decided on the following four polishes:

Hot Pink: OCC 'Anime'

Green: Illamasqua 'Nomad'

Yellow: Chanel 'Mimosa'

Coral: Butter London 'Trout Pout'

3) Map out your design:

This step is optional although I definitely recommend it. With so many little 'diamond' squares it's hard to get a feel as to where you need to put the different polish colours to create your preferred design. Using a piece of white cardstock paper and the four polishes I chose, I played around with a number of different designs, but finally settled on the one shown above.

4) Paint your necklace using small dots of nail polish:

While I have seen some people use a small artists brush for this step, I personally just used the nail polish brushes themselves. In order for the colour to show up, you need a fairly thick, yet small (in terms of size) dot. Take your time applying the nail polish as mistakes unfortunately cannot be removed.

5) Show off your new necklace!:

Personally, I think that this necklace looks amazing on, and really don't think anyone would be able to tell it was handmade, using nail polish, nonetheless.

DIY: Neon Necklace Tutorial

Hey Everyone,

I am absolutely in love with this summer's neon trend! I love a bright pop of colour with any outfit, and think that neon accessories (purses, jewelry, etc.) are the perfect way to embrace the trend without going overboard. After seeing several neon necklaces, from various shops on etsy, I decided to make my own. Below is my super easy tutorial on how you too can make your own neon jewelry.

1) Find a piece of jewelry you want to transform:

My sister and I found this necklace at our local second hand store for $5.99. Personally, I would recommend finding a piece of jewelry made from metal, rather than wood or plastic, as metal seems to hold on to the spray paint much better.

2) Spray your piece of jewelry with white primer:

Since you want your neon necklace to be very vibrant, it is best to start with a white primer. This allows the coloured spray paint to better adhere to your necklace, and gives you a nice neutral base to work from. After several attempts, my sister and I found that it is best to spray the primer in several light coats, allowing 2-3 minutes of drying time between each coat.

3) Spray your piece of jewelry with the neon spray paint colour of your choice:

Like the primer, it is important to spray the necklace with several light coats of neon paint, allowing 2-3 minutes of drying time between each coat. My sister and I chose to use a neon yellow spray paint (seen above) as well as a neon pink/coral spray paint for all of the jewelry we made . We found our neon spray paint at Home Depot for $6.49 a bottle.

4) Spray your piece of jewellery with a finishing gloss:

This step is optional. If you prefer the look of matte neon jewelry, you can leave it as is. Personally, my sister and I liked the way the jewelry looks when it is shiny, and thought that an extra finishing coat may help keep the jewelry from getting scratched up.

5) Show off your new necklace with flare!:

I love the neon yellow necklace and think it looks great with a more neutral (I like black and white) outfit.

This is definitely one of the easiest DIY projects I have done, although I will admit it takes a bit of patience, especially when waiting for the paint to dry between coats. It's a great way to give old and unused jewelry a new summer look. Below are some of the other pieces me made.

My Birthday Haul

Hey Everyone,

I know, I know, another birthday related post. Even I'm getting sick of them. Well, don't worry, after this one, I promise you won't be seeing another birthday related post until next month, when I start counting down to my 31st (I'm joking!). As I mentioned in my other posts, I had a fabulous 30th birthday, and was so happy to be able to celebrate with close family and friends. I was absolutely spoiled (seriously) this year and wanted to share my birthday 'haul' with all of you.

My childhood best fried, Jenny and I reconnected recently and it has been great catching up. One of my favourite things about Jenny is that she and I have very similar taste when it comes to fashion and beauty. Jenny spoiled me with the following:

Bath and Body Works Candle in 'Drenched Apple Flower': I can't even describe to you how great this candle smells. It's very light and fresh, with a hint of both flowers and apples (hence the name). Amazing!

Bath and Body Works Candle in 'Mango Beach Wood': This light beachy sent is perfect for summer. With a combination of mango, pineapple, mandarin and sandalwood, this candle reminds me of a tropical fruit smoothie. Yummy!

Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer: Jenny swears by this tinted moisturizer (which seems to have fairly full coverage), and I can't wait to try it.

H&M Scarf: This blue, coral, yellow and purple spring-like scarf looks gorgeous with a variety of outfits. Jenny bought this scarf for herself as well (see, we do have similar taste), so now, it is known as the friendship scarf (friendship rings, bracelets, etc. are so 2011).

Aldo Neon Necklace: I am absolutely obsessed with neon at the moment, and literally squealed when I saw this necklace from Aldo. I love that it has three different coloured chains, including the gold, which acts as more of a neutral. Trust me when I say that you will see this necklace in a bunch of Summer OOTD posts.

While in NYC for IMATS, I got the chance to hang out with Camille from Never Naked Blog, one of my closest blogging friends (she was one of the first bloggers I met). Camille is so sweet, and picked out three jewelry pieces I absolutely love.

Posh Couture Silver Cowboy Boot Necklace: Knowing how much I love country music, and that I am heading to Nashville very soon, Camille gave me a super cute cowboy boot necklace to wear on my trip. I am actually thinking of getting a cowboy boot tattoo while I am away, so this will definitely serve as great inspiration.

Pier One Imports Ring and Bracelets: I didn't even know that Pier One made jewelry, but these gunmetal and diamond accessories are just my style.

I was so happy that my two favourite plus size models (and good friends) Karyn and Melissa of Killer Kurves were able to come down (it's a 2+ hour drive) and help me celebrate my Birthday. Surprisingly, Melissa and I had never actually met in person (we talk over BBM and Facebook a lot), but it felt like we had been friends forever. The Killer Kurves ladies completely spoiled me.

Stella and Dot Pearl Bracelet: This pearl and sparkly silver beaded bracelet mixes classic feminine with edgy rocker for a perfectly chic accessory. Love it.

Gift Certificates From Sephora and Gussied Up: I love to shop so gift certificates are the perfect present for me. With gift certificates to one of my favourite beauty stores (Sephora) and one of my favourite plus size clothing stores (Gussied Up), I will be in shopping heaven.

My sisters and I are pretty bad when it comes to surprising each other with gifts. Usually we pick out what we would like, and then ask the other person to buy it. Yes, it loses the element of surprise, but we are sure to always get something we really want. I have been longing after some HRH Collection jewelry pieces for a while now, but honestly, find them too expensive to justify. Luckily, I came across an etsy store called Chi Chi Love that sells almost identical 'HRH' pieces, but at a lower price. I mentioned the site to my sisters who gave me the following:

Chi Chi Love Large Metal Chain Necklace: This piece is pretty much identical to the one I wanted from HRH Collection. I love the mix of chunky metals, and can see myself wearing this with a variety of outfits. While I am usually more of a gold jewelry kind of girl (they do sell this in gold on the Chi Chi Love site), I think this particular necklace looks better in silver.

Thin Gunmetal and Silver Chain Necklace: I absolutely love this necklace. I am a big fan of mixing metals and think the silver and gunmetal chains look amazing together. I also really like the small rose gold skull that sits close to the neck, and the fact that the chains are various lengths. This is probably my favourite piece from Chi Chi Love, and I have already been wearing it a lot.

My friend Lisa and her daughter Richmond (who I nanny for) absolutely spoiled me. After seeing a couple of my facebook statuses and youtube videos, Lisa kept a mental note, and surprised me with some of the items on my makeup wish list.

Anastasia Brow Kit, Brow Fix and Brow Enhancing Serum: To be honest, I wasn't really the type who did my eyebrows before I received this kit. Now, I can't stop. This set, which includes numerous brow stencils, brow powder, tweezers, Anastasia's famous brow gel and more, has everything a person needs in order to get the perfect brows. I have been using this daily and highly recommend it.

YSL Ombres 5 Lumieres No. 13 Palette: Having only tried one lipgloss from the brand, I was dying to get my hands on some pieces from the of the YSL Spring 2012 collection, including this eyeshadow palette. With five gorgeous, pastel shades, this spring palette is almost too gorgeous to use (almost..).

YSL Voile de Blush in 'Pink Veil': I love a good cream blush and thought that the new YSL Voile de Blushes looked interesting. Falling somewhere between a gel and a cream, these blushes make for a sheer finish that can be built up for more colour.

My friend Kerri is amazing when it comes to making jewelry, and so I asked her to make me a pair of earrings similar to ones I had seen on the HRH Collection website. Unfortunately the beads we ordered online have yet to make their way here so, I am still waiting on those earrings. What we have picked out so far (the earring chain, clasp, etc.) is amazing, and I can't wait to show them to you. Not expecting anything else, Kerri surprised me with two of my favourite things.

Handmade Turquoise Necklace: I remember when Kerri first made this necklace (last summer I believe), I spent a good hour trying to convince her to let me have it (or buy it off her). She wasn't willing to give it up at the time, but surprised me with it for my birthday. I love turquoise and gold together and think this will be the perfect summer accessory.

LUSH Gift Certificate: I am a LUSH fanatic and was so happy to see a LUSH gift certificate, as I needed to stock up on some of my LUSH essentials. I used the card yesterday and bought myself the 'Almond and Coconut Shower Smoothie', a super moisturizing shower cream that I use to shave my legs.

To fuel my shopping habit even more, I was grateful to receive several gift certificates from my friends Ashlen, Alice, Amanda, and from my cousins. I bought a pair of retro sunglasses and rose gold earrings from old, and plan to use the rest of the gift certificates very soon.

Last October when I went to LA, I had the opportunity to meet up with one my favourite bloggers (and the sweetest person ever), Arlene. We have been in touch ever since, and I was excited to receive a super cute package from her in the mail.

Hello Kitty Mon Amour Compact Mirror and Nail Files: How cute are these items from the latest Hello Kitty collection at Sephora? The nail files are too pretty to use, so for now they are sitting out on my makeup desk. The mirror, which is too cute for words, stays in my purse for daily touch ups. Love!

Cannon Rebel T3i: I have been wanting a new camera for about a year now and was super excited to receive the Cannon Rebel T3i from my parents. I have absolutely no idea how to use it (I tried reading some of the manual but got completely confused), but luckily found someone who is willing to teach me. I hope this camera will help further my blogging 'career', and make my site look a little more professional.

I can't say it enough, I had a fabulous birthday month (let's be honest, it wasn't a day). I am so thankful to everyone who helped me celebrate it. Thank you again for all of the well wishes!

Hey Everyone,

One of my favourite bloggers, Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog, does a weekly poll on her blog encouraging readers to take part. Every Monday, I will be posting my answers to her questions on my blog, and hope that you will join me by making your own post, or leaving your answers to the following questions in the comment section below.

1) Mood: Exhausted. The last couple of days have been very busy (although I really haven't been doing anything important), and all I feel like doing is lying in bed and watching 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey'. Unfortunately, I have a workout with my trainer tonight...Boo!

2) What’s your current favorite eye look?: I really like a neutral smoky eye. A light lid (usually MAC's 'Blanc Type'), a medium brown crease (usually MAC's 'Haux' or 'Wedge') and a dark outer-v (usually MAC's 'Handwritten').

3) What’s your favorite fried food?: Hmmm...I'm not usually fan of deep fried food as it gives me a bad stomach ache. I have had a deep fried Mars bar a couple of times and have to admit that it was really good!

4) The next book on your reading list?: My favourite author, Jen Lancaster, just came out with her latest memoir called "Jenneration X', so I really want to pick that one up (or download it on to my ereader). I also really want to read the newest Sophie Kinsella book called 'I've Got Your Number', the newest Jane Green book called 'Another Piece of My Heart' and the new Jodi Picoult book called 'Lone Wolf'. I also have a ton of books I bought at both garage and book sales last summer that I really need to read.

5) How’s your sense of direction?: I think it's pretty good. I used to be horrible with directions. I once got on a city bus that was supposed to take me to my house (a ten minute ride), and only clued in that I was totally on the wrong bus after an hour and a half of riding around the city. These days I can have a good idea of where I am/where I am going and am usually the one who gives the directions to my sisters/friends.

6) Do you think people can change?: I don't know. I would like to think that people can change, but to be completely honest, a lot of the friendships I've had in the past five or so years would tell me much differently.

7) Your favorite lipstick of all time?: I would have to go with a super bright lipstick, and say, either MAC's 'Impassioned' (a neon pink) or MAC's 'Vegas Volt' (a bright coral-orange).

8) What’s for lunch?: I already ate lunch. I went out with my sister Krista, her boyfriend and my friend Kerri to a local burger place. It's actually a really cool place. They have over 50 different kinds of burgers (well topping combinations), and their milkshakes (or any of their drinks) come in big measuring cups. They also have really good veggie burgers (I am a vegetarian).

9) What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?: Even if you are scared, do as many adventurous and wild things as you can. I was never the type that would want to travel the world, or sky dive, but now that I fibromyalgia, and would have a hard time physically doing those things, they are all I can think about.

10) Weekly goals: Avoid going out in public?! I am getting my second chemical/facial peel tomorrow, and can't wear any makeup for the next five or so days.

From Dark to Light: My Experience at Hair Ink Studio

Hey Everyone,

A couple of months ago, I had the awesome experience of getting my hair done at Hair Ink Studio, a newly opened hair salon located in Toronto's up and coming Leslieville neighbourhood. Hair Ink Studios, run by partners Roxanne Muir and Susan Phillips is, in my opinion, a breath of fresh air in an industry that has become less and less focused on customer service.

With a philosophy that clients should have 100% of their hair dresser's attention during their visit, Roxanne and Susan run their salon a little differently. First, the Hair Ink Studio ladies do not have assistants. They do the hair colouring, cutting, washing and blowdrying themselves so that their clients are not being passed back and forth and get the same stylist, with the same vision, doing their hair. Second, they do not double book clients or answer the phone while a client is in their chair. If you are waiting for your colour to process or your hair to dry, they are right there with you. You have their full attention while you are there, which helps make the salon feel calm and relaxing.

One of a coolest things about Hair Ink Studio is that they are completely green. With the help of a company called Green Circle Salons, Roxanne and Susan recycle everything from dye bottles to the actual hair they cut off. The products are then used in a number of charitable ways including: 1) Using the hair to stuff milk bags and create pillows for those who were forced to live in tents after the earthquake in Haiti and 2) Stuffing old pantyhose with the old hair in order to soak up oil spills in the Ocean.

After researching a few different salons that specialized in bonded hair extensions, I found my way to Roxanne. Roxanne, who has 19 years of experience in the hair industry, is a certified extension artist and uses an infra light machine to apply keratin bond extensions to the hair. Unlike the traditional glue bond, the keratin bonds do not damage the hair and work well for all hair types (including those who have thin or damaged hair).

I wrote Roxanne, and explained that my hair was not growing fast enough for my liking, and that I really wanted longer hair for my upcoming trip to NYC. Roxanne explained to me that she would need to see my hair in person to see if I was a candidate for extensions, so we set up a consultation.

My 'Before' Hair

Unfortunately, when I went for my consultation, Roxanne told me that my hair was too choppy in the back (I had several layers at the time), and that she was concerned the extensions wouldn't blend in properly and would give me an unnatural look. She suggested we cut my hair so that it was all the same length (my hair was a little ragged from trying to grow out of an A-symmetrical bob), and add a bunch of honey and caramel highlights for a lighter look (I expressed an interest in going back to my natural blonde colour). As disappointed as I was not to get extensions, I really appreciated her honesty and knowledge, and was excited for a new look.

Roxanne was great at explaining everything she was doing, and exactly what she was using, and gave me a lesson on how to properly use a round brush and dryer to style my hair (trust me, I needed the help). One of the coolest parts of the experience was when Roxanne flat ironed my hair with the Brocato Vibrastrait Flat Iron, a new vibrating flat iron that I immediately added to my wish list. Not only did this flat iron give me a nice head message (seriously, it felt great!), it didn't tug and completely straightened sections of my unruly hair with just one swipe. Roxanne provided me with a few products from the Brocato line including a shampoo, conditioner and serum to help maintain my cut and colour.

My After Hair

I really loved my final look and was surprised by how healthy my hair felt after having so many highlights put in. The cut was great and I loved the fact that my hair no longer felt shaggy or mullet-like. I haven't had my hair cut since, and am happy to say that I can finally see it growing out. I also really liked the colour which gave me a more natural and much softer look. Of course, being the indecisive hair junkie I am, I died my hair dark brown before my trip to NYC (I can't make up my mind. One day I want to be dark, one day I want to be blonde).

April Favourites

Hey Everyone,

Wow, I honestly can not believe it is already May (I know, I know, such a cliched thing to say). It seems like 2012 is flying by way too fast, and doomsday is almost here (I kid, I don't believe in that stuff...I don't think). Unfortunately, April wasn't a very exciting month for me in terms of beauty products (personally, it was a great month), and I, therefore, don't have many new favourites to show. With that said, there were a few items I fell in love with (or 're-fell in love with'), and so of course, I wanted to share them with you. Here are my April favourites:

Mac Cosmetics Powder Blush in 'Immortal Flower':

I was lucky enough to be one of the few people that was actually able to get their hands on 'Immortal Flower', a gorgeous light pinky-peach blush from MAC's recent 'Tres Cheek' collection. I have been using this blush almost every day this month, and find that it looks great with any eye or lip look. This blush is somewhat sheer (which is nice for daytime), but can definitely be built up for a more dramatic and colourful look. I absolutely love this colour, and can see it being a monthly favourite throughout the rest of spring and summer.

MAC Cosmetics Cream Colour Base in 'Pearl':

For someone who hates glittery highlighters, I sure do have a lot of them. With an uneven skintone, and my fair share of acne, I find that most highlighters draw attention to my flawed skin. It is for this reason, that I am once again loving MAC's cream colour base in 'Pearl'. This cream highlighter contains no glitter, shimmer, etc., and instead smoothes nicely on the cheekbones for a gorgeous, and very natural, glow. If you like the look of dewy skin, I would highly recommend any of MAC's Cream Colour Bases.

Benefit 'They're Real!' Mascara:

After months of reading rave reviews about Benefit's 'They're Real!' mascara, I finally gave in and bought it. At first, I wasn't all that impressed, but as I used it more and more (and the formula started to dry out a little), I really started to like it. Not only does this mascara lengthen my lashes, it also helps separate them for a 'false lash effect'. If you are looking for length, I would highly recommend this mascara. If on the other hand, you are looking for volume or fullness, I would choose something else, as I, personally didn't find this mascara to help with either.

MAC Fluidline in 'Black Track':

I'm not much of an eyeliner girl (I prefer my lash line bare), so I didn't pay much attention to MAC's Fluidline gel liners until taking my second makeup artistry class a few months ago. Not only does this liner apply super smoothly, it lasts all day and has very minimal smudging. I am slowly getting better at creating a winged liner effect (I'm better on others than I am on myself), and would like to pick up some of the other Fluidline colours. If you have any recommendations, be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

Sigma E05 Eyeliner Brush:

Starting to use gel liner on a more regular basis has led me to search for the perfect eyeliner brush. While I have tried several brushes, my favourite by far is the Sigma E05. This small angled eyeliner brush is a miracle worker as it somehow allows my hand to create a fairly smooth and solid line (trust me, it's a miracle). I really like all of the Sigma brushes, but if you could only get one, I would definitely suggest picking up the E05.

B. Kamins Bio-Maple Lip Balm:

I received a sample size of this lip balm a couple of months ago and immediately fell in love. Not only is this lip balm super moisturizing, it feels amazing on the lips (very creamy, but not at all greasy), and makes my lips appear somewhat plumper. I would definitely like to buy a full sized tube but, unfortunately have no idea where I can buy B. Kamins products. If anyone knows, be sure to let me know in the comment section below.

The Beauty Blender:

If I had to recommend one 'tool' for any makeup newbie (or oldie) to invest in, I would, without a doubt, recommend The Beauty Blender. This small pink sponge (which expands when wet) helps press makeup (foundation, blush, etc.) into the skin for a smooth, airbrushed finish. Personally, if I don't use my beauty blender, I notice that my foundation tends to look very cakey and uneven. The Beauty Blender is somewhat expensive ($19.99 USD per sponge) but, if properly taken care of, will last a very long time.

My NYC Haul

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are not sick of haul posts because, unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you see it), I still have a couple of more to do. Today's haul includes all of the items I picked up while shopping in NYC (not including IMATS). To be honest, I am actually quite surprised by how little I bought while there. I tried on a bunch of clothing and accessories, but there weren't many things that caught my eye. With that said, I am really happy with my purchases (I got a few things I had been longing after for a while) and wanted to share them with you.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac Clutch in 'Electric Pink'
I have been drooling over this hot pink Rebecca Minkoff purse for months now, and decided that NYC was the perfect place to buy myself a little present. I love this purse for several reasons. One, it's hot pink, and am totally in to this summer's neon trend. Two, it's a cross body bag which is the only type of bag I currently use, because of my bad back. Finally, it's a designer bag, but I didn't have to sell my right kidney to pay for it. This was definitely my favourite purchase of the trip (including everything I bought for IMATS) and I can't wait to use it.

Vince Camuto Rose Gold Bangles

To be completely honest, I'm not sure if these bracelets are actually part of the Vince Camuto line. Stupidly, I cut off the tags before wearing them, and all I can remember is that the designer's name started with a 'V'. I have been searching for some rose gold bangles to match the rose gold Michael Kors watch I got last Christmas, and while these bangles were on the pricer side (at least for me), I love how they match my watch perfectly.

$2.99 Jewelry

On the last night of our trip, my friend and I were walking back from Time Square when we noticed a small, and very cheap, jewelry shop near our hotel. The majority of the items were $2.99, and while they are definitely not quality items, they are cute (diamond lips and a lipstick?!), and will make great additions to my current jewelry collection.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes in 'Flush' and 'Amused'

I already own two of Tarte's Amazonian Clay Blushes, and really like them. To be honest, I don't think they live up to their 12 hour claim (who tests these things anyway), but they are all very pigmented, blend smoothly onto the cheeks, and can be kept in their original containers or popped out and stored in magnetic palettes. 'Flush' is a deep berry blush with purple undertones that gives the cheeks a nice rosy glow. 'Amused' is a bright, hot pink blush perfect for summer.

NARS Powder Eyeshadow in 'Lhasa':

When this eyeshadow first came out, I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted to get it. First off, it looked as though it would be too similar to some of the shadows I already owned. Second, I refuse to my buy high-end makeup in Canada because the prices are way more than in the States. So, by the time I realized I did in fact want to get my hands on it, it was too late (it was a very popular product). Surprisingly, on a late night visit to the Times Square Sephora, I located not only one 'Lhasa' eyeshadow, but 10-15 (no worries, I only bought one). This taupe shadow with purple undertones looks gorgeous as an all over lid colour, or can be worn in the crease for a more dramatic look. This is a must have shadow, so if you happen to find yourself in the Times Square Sephora, be sure to check it out.

Illamasqua Nail Varnish in 'Nomad'

I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this polish. Falling somewhere between a green mint and a turquoise blue, Nomad is the perfect spring polish. This polish applies completely opaque in two coats (you could probably get away with one) and wears, without chipping, for quite some time. I have had this polish on for the last week or so and have received a ton of compliments on it. If you have access to Illasmaqua products, I would advise you to pick this up as, in my opinion, it is a must have!

YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Lipstick in 'Succulent Pomegranate'

I never thought I would be the kind of person who would spend $30 USD on what is essentially, a tinted lip balm. Well, things change. My new found love for all things YSL, led me to this amazing, hot pink lip-balm that applies thin but can be built up for a more neon lipped look. The YSL Volupte Sheer lipsticks are super moisturizing, very creamy, and smell like heaven on earth (very fruity). I am totally in love with this product, and without a doubt, will be purchasing shades in the future (unfortunately they don't sell YSL where I live).
